Head Shot Why Change

Head Shot Why Change

TLP Photo has a formula for Headshots and on a side note we are going to make a slight modification coming up but the basis of the formula is the same……….photos of that to come soon.

Recently clients have booked us for a headshot session because they love what we have done for other clients. Great we love the extra business.

Here is the twist the next thing I know we are not doing headshots the client wants 1/2 to 3/4 body shots they pick them as their final edits and guess what a few weeks go by and they are not happy………. Well I am smart and did several headshot with our formula but the client still has to pay additional editing fees.

A headshot is exactly that a headshot the chance for your target audience to interact with you via a photo………. EYES it is all about the eyes……….. Okay of the soapbox for today……..

Warming Up With Red~!

Warming Up With Red~!

Still cold here on the East Coast so I am trying to warm it up with some RED from our RGB photos this summer.

When we get a hot day I will post the photo FIRE, which is an odd title since the focal point is a shoe………..

Sam as always is fun to work with; we will blog about her soon and post a few of her pics……..If you are on the East Coast and need an amazing model and Sam fits your needs contact us and I will send you her info…….

Enjoy RED~!

Red, White, & Blue – RGB

Memorial Day has come and gone, we are very grateful to all of those who have served.  One of the things I want to focus on this year is primary colors this year in the photos we post – RGB.  So this photo has at least RED & BLUE really emphasized, we would love to see your RGB photos.  Cheers~!

Ring Light ~!

Sorry folks have been a bit behind on the blog, which is a good thing since we have been busy in the studio.  Including a very fun video project we are working on details coming soon on that……………..

Blog, I like to blog about what we do with our clients and why.   We hope to show our potential clients what we do and we have a few photographers, interns and newer folks that check it out and we want them to learn also.Image

The Ring Light is one of our many light sources available to us at the studio, how often do we use it ??  Not that often you need the right subject and situation.   The Light creates a wonderful catch light in the eyes in fact it is another technique to emphasize the eyes with no need of photo shop.   The light creates a narrowing effect on the face and complimentary shadowing to the background which I feel help anchor the subject.

Image

Pitfalls what to be careful of, exposure it is very easy to loose details in the face do not fear the drop off effect keep your details.

The nose, you will cast a shadow to both sides of the nose, not harsh but still right and left of the nose as you will see in both images.

Angles, be careful of your angles the first image the lighting is not as even as the second image.

Last the distance from light to subject, due to the fact that the light is at the same location of the camera lens I often shoot with a wider lens than other portraits.

I am happy with both images and so were the clients more posts and images to come soon………..

Cheers

Film is there a place for it ??

Hello all recently my blogs have been inspired by colleges with questions and friends with passion today is no different. A great friend Jim S. still shoots nothing but film in multiple formats.  I love Jim he pushes me all the time to shoot more film and actually got me a few years ago to start shooting film again.  (No that is not Jim but Actor Ken Arnold)

Image

As the business started to grow and change again for us I had less time for fun photography and I was classifying film as fun photography.  Thinking back I should have never stopped shooting it with a few reasons coming up.

I was shooting an event for friends an older gentleman about 20 years older than I was shooting digital asked me if I know of anyone that wanted to purchase dark room equipment.  We chatted and I laughed when he told me how happy he was when he stopped shooting film many years ago for the savings.  I laughed because when I shot film I had no editing software there were a couple labs that did it all for me. Now I have the full Adobe CC setup, I edit I do video, I have other video programs, and I work with a couple of graphic artist. Wow has the industry changed.  That is another story for us old folks later.

Image

So the shots I am posting are medium format film low res scans and I shot these about a year ago.  We did these when working with Actor Ken Arnold; we went over all of the digital files did our editing and had more than enough for him to have a years worth of material.  Completely forgot about the film negatives, in fact lost track of it because when they came back from the lab we moved onto other work for clients and Ken was happy with digital files.

Image

Not sure why I was going over these negatives more than likely spring cleaning at the office and the studio; but I posted the first one you saw on Facebook tagged Ken in it along with a couple of other ones.  The post clearly stated they were film photos low res negative scan.

People were instantly attracted to the photos or the word FILM, you really never know which one in truth.  So we have started to toss around the idea of offering film for some of clients more specifically headshots.  Another photographer asked us why just do it digital and give it the right effect.  Our response well it is not that simple and anything that creates more traffic and makes a product stand out from others is worth the extra effort.  Your Thoughts??
